About Varinia Bernales

Research and collaboration

I am an Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Chemistry at the University of Toronto and the Principal Investigator and Co-Director of Matter Lab. My research brings together quantum chemistry, machine learning, and autonomous experimentation, with a focus on scientific safety and trustworthy AI-driven decision-making.

Background

My career spans academia and seven years in industry, including roles at Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes and The Dow Chemical Company. My work bridges fundamental science and industrial application in catalysis, materials innovation, and computational chemistry.

I mentor interdisciplinary teams of computer scientists, chemists, engineers, and physicists working on AI for science and autonomous experimentation.
