El Agente
Autonomous computational chemistry
El Agente is research on AI agents for computational chemistry. The El Agente platform connects this work to a broader program of scientific automation at the Matter Lab, University of Toronto.
The platform, the university laboratory, and individual research systems are not interchangeable. A paper documents a particular system and evaluation, not every capability of the broader platform.
The paper describes El Agente as a cognitive architecture for language agents and El Agente Q as its application to computational and quantum chemistry. El Agente Q: purpose, full citation, benchmarks, and limitations →
Origins and scientific leadership
The May 2, 2025 University of Toronto announcement credits a large multidisciplinary team. It identifies Prof. Varinia Bernales as Matter Lab’s director of research and Prof. Alán Aspuru-Guzik as its principal investigator at that time. Both are corresponding authors of the 2025 Matter article; Bernales is the journal’s lead contact.
Matter Lab identifies itself as the Aspuru-Guzik and Bernales group. About Varinia Bernales · About Alán Aspuru-Guzik.
These documented research roles do not establish company founding, sole project conception, or detailed individual software contributions. No separate company identity or founding history is asserted here.

Platform and network
The institutional announcement directs readers to El Agente’s Canadian project site. The Canadian network page describes El Agente UK as its UK expansion site. A network relationship does not establish that the domains are canonical aliases or separate incorporated companies.
The university announcement discusses integration with self-driving laboratories as planned work and potential applications, not as proof that every platform feature has been demonstrated.
